Military and Emergency Service personnel, which includes Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s), Firefighters, Law Enforcement, and Public Safety, often place themselves in harm’s way in order to assist others in times of need. In service to the community these people risk health and injury in performance of their duties that may easily lead to debilitating health issues including Acute Stress, PTSD, Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue. Counselors who choose to serve these populations need to understand the cultural values, and the particular issues that these personnel face in the performance of their duties.
Counselors must also understand the potential issues that may arise when working with populations that have experienced, or work with, trauma, and the potential impact on the counselor including secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization. In this training event, participants will review significant cultural and clinical elements of working with Military and Emergency Service personnel/issues and their families, and identify ways to promote growth in their clients as well as avoid burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization in themselves.
This event will provide 3 NBCC qualified continuing hours (of which one (1) will be in ethics).

The expansion of mental health services into tele-formats has forced clinical supervision to evolve its approaches and capacity. The growth of supervision of tele-mental health services, and the demand for virtual supervision itself, have prompted changes that are necessary to address and support the counseling professional. This class explores and reviews the mechanism, structures, and ethics of clinical supervision, in both in-person and virtual formats, to enhance supervisory skills and understanding.

The provision of clinical services can place counseling professionals in danger of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization. From working with clients who have themselves experienced trauma, to the everyday grind of counseling work, many risk factors can contribute to a counselor’s potential impairment, while other factors can support their health and growth. Through training and awareness counselors can learn to identify the signs and symptoms of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization and learn ways to avoid, prevent, and address such potential impairments.

This discussion will focus on the legal and ethics foundations of licensing, and ways a licensed professional counselor can prepare for potential interactions with the regulatory boards and the judicial system.
