Program Content:

From social media to the practices of eLearning, technology is ubiquitous in our lives and is expanding the areas of tele-counseling and tele-supervision. This discussion will focus on ethical issues as they relate to working with clients through a distance medium, the impact technology is having on the counseling professions, and its increasing influence on professional ethical codes and licensing/credentialing regulations.


Learning Objectives:

- Explore the ethical issues of working with clients through a distance medium

- Identify generational and cultural differences in the use of digital devices

- Review of professional Codes of Ethics as they relate to distance counseling practices

- Analyze current state licensing requirements and guidelines regarding distance counseling

- Integrate an understanding of best practices, skills, boundary issues, and counselor readiness to work with clients through a distance medium


Presenter:

Keith Cates, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS, BC-TMH

Dr. Cates has been in the field of mental health services since 2002 and has worked in hospital, clinic, community, and higher education settings. He has experience teaching in counseling and psychology graduate and undergraduate programs; supervision and clinical direction of educational and community counseling programs; managing mental health programs, staff, program evaluation and client evaluation in educational and community settings, and providing clinical counseling and supervision services in face-to-face and distance formats. He holds an LPC in Alabama and Georgia, is a Board Certified TeleMental Health provider (BC-TMH), and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS).
